With reference to your letter No.10059/96 of
the 13th May last, relative to the provision of barrack
accommodation at Hong Kong, I am directed by the
Secretary of State for War to acquaint you, for the
information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies,
that it has been arranged between the Governor and the
General Officer Commanding the Troops, Hong Kong, that
the sum voted by the Legislative Council for the
current year should be devoted to the construction of
barracks at Kowloon for the Hong Kong Regiment, and an
urgent demand for certain stores required for the work
has been received.
As the General Officer Commanding reported by
telegraph that the Colony proposed to pay for the store's
in question on delivery, it was anticipated that the
Crown Agents for the Colonies would not be in a position
to pay for the stores on their delivery by the contractor
at Woolwich for shipment, and therefore it has been
arranged that in this instance the bills for the
stores will be met by this Office, and the value of the
stores,
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
